Why I, as a mother and biochemist, am committed to fighting chemicals in detergents

I am 35 years old, a biochemist and mother of a wonderful little daughter. My journey towards greater sustainability and awareness began when I was pregnant with my first child a few years ago. Suddenly I was asking myself questions that I had never asked myself before: Which substances actually come into contact with my baby's sensitive skin? Are our everyday products really as safe as we think?

As a scientist, I began to take a closer look at the ingredients in our detergents – and I was shocked.

Many detergents contain chemicals that can harm not only our skin but also the environment. These include:

  • Phosphates that pollute our waters.
  • Artificial fragrances that cause allergies and can be stored in the body permanently.
  • Petroleum-based surfactants that settle on clothing and then enter our bodies through the skin.

I find it particularly alarming that these substances can be found even in products that are marketed as "sensitive" or "suitable for babies." Once I became aware of these risks, I simply couldn't look away.

As a mother, I naturally only want the best for my child - and as a biochemist, I have the knowledge to understand these topics. But I also know that many parents don't have time to struggle through chemical jargon and endless lists of ingredients. That's why I've made it my mission to make this knowledge accessible and easy to understand.

I give talks, write blog posts, and share simple tips on social media about how families can avoid chemicals. My goal is not to scare people, but to provide practical alternatives.
